“20 Percent” of Tehran Supermarkets Have Closed Due to Price Increases

The head of Tehran’s supermarket and protein products union says that economic conditions have caused between 15 to 20 percent of Tehran’s supermarkets to close their stores or change professions.

Saeid Derakhshani told the Rokna news agency that supermarket closures have occurred due to reasons including increased prices of consumer goods, decreased purchasing power of people, low sales, increased taxes, and high rent.

The head of Tehran’s supermarket union says if the trend of rising prices continues and people’s purchasing power decreases accordingly, undoubtedly many business activities in this sector will shut down.

Previously, Ghasemali Hasani, secretary of the food material bankers union, told ILNA news agency on the fourth day of Shahrivar this year that prices of widely-consumed food items in Iran have increased by between 30 to 90 percent since the beginning of this year to date.
