21 Years Since Saeed Zeinali’s Disappearance; Amnesty International Calls for Disclosure of Detained Student’s Status

Amnesty International has called on the Islamic Republic of Iran to disclose the fate and whereabouts of Saeed Zeinali, a detained student, after two decades have passed.

Amnesty International stated on Wednesday, July 9, in a post on its Twitter account: “Two decades have passed since the forced disappearance of student activist Saeed Zeinali. Amnesty International stands with his suffering family in pursuit of truth and justice.”

The statement continued: “Iranian authorities must disclose his fate and whereabouts and put an end to this ongoing cruelty.”

Saeed Zeinali was among students arrested during the student protests of July 18, 1999 (18 Tir 1378).

While a spokesperson for the Judiciary announced that there is no document regarding the arrest of Saeed Zeinali, the student’s mother stated in an interview with the Persian service of Voice of America that Saeed was arrested outside their home in 1999. The Zeinali family has been contacting legal and security authorities for years seeking news of their son.

Previously, in 2015, over 320 civil activists had written to the United Nations calling for investigation into Saeed Zeinali’s fate.
