30% of Iranian Citizens Suffer from Coronavirus-Related Mental Disorders

Iran’s Ministry of Health has reported an increase in mental disorders, particularly in connection with the coronavirus pandemic. Mental disorders have been more severe among those who either contracted COVID-19 themselves or lost a family member.

Results of a research study on mental disorders caused by the coronavirus pandemic, conducted on 25,000 Iranian citizens, have been published.

A website affiliated with the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) reported on the increase in mental disorders among people in connection with the consequences of the coronavirus outbreak in the country.

Ahmad Noor Balah, secretary of the specialized committee on mental health at Iran’s Ministry of Health, stated that 29.7 percent of Iran’s population has been affected by mental disorders.

It should be noted that the results of a mental health survey of the Iranian people conducted last December showed that approximately 15 percent of people were dealing with coronavirus at that time.

Research to identify mental disorders in 30 percent of Iranian citizens was conducted before the start of the fifth wave of the coronavirus pandemic, and in other words, the extent of disorders is currently more widespread than at the time this research was conducted.

According to Noor Balah’s statements, “The findings show that COVID-19 has exacerbated mental disorders, and those who contracted COVID-19 and lost a family member have experienced more severe mental disorders.”

Official Vaccination Statistics

Iran’s student news agency “ISNA” quoted officials from the Islamic Republic’s Ministry of Health as claiming that approximately 61 million doses of coronavirus vaccine have been administered in the country so far.

Based on the breakdown statistics of coronavirus vaccine administration in Iran, approximately 49 million doses (administered in the first and second rounds combined) are related to the Sinovac vaccine. Approximately 6 million and 200 thousand doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine have been administered in both rounds.

These statistics also indicate that a total of approximately 5 million doses of the Barekat vaccine have been administered in two rounds so far. As a result, the share of Iranian-made vaccines in the total vaccines administered has been less than 10 percent.
