“50 Percent” of Mustafa Daneshju’s Lungs Incapacitated; Imprisoned Gonabadi Dervish

The lawyer of Mustafa Daneshju, a court attorney and imprisoned Gonabadi dervish, says based on medical examinations “50 percent” of Mr. Daneshju’s lungs have become incapacitated and he must be under the care of a specialist physician, but officials are preventing his transfer to a hospital for treatment.

Ali Sharifzadeh, Mustafa Daneshju’s lawyer, said on Tuesday, February 2, in an interview with Voice of America that based on “medical records and documents available in Evin Prison’s medical clinic,” his client does not have proper physical health and suffers from multiple illnesses that must be treated under the care of a specialist physician.

Ali Sharifzadeh told Voice of America: We have repeatedly sent letters to the medical commission and the supervisor of political and security prisoners in Evin Prison requesting that Mr. Daneshju be transferred to treatment centers, but we have not received any response so far.

Mustafa Daneshju was arrested in June 2018 by order of the prosecutor of Branch 3 of the Security Prosecutor’s Office and was sentenced to eight years in prison by Judge Moghadesi in Branch 28 of the Revolutionary Court on charges of assembly and conspiracy against national security, propaganda against the system, and spreading false information with the intent to disturb public opinion.

According to Mr. Sharifzadeh, last week, following an exacerbation of Mustafa Daneshju’s gastrointestinal illness, prison officials only transferred him to Evin Prison’s medical clinic and after administering an IV drip and an injection, they returned him to the prison wards.

Earlier, Mike Pompeo, the U.S. Secretary of State, in a note published in the newspaper “USA Today” in August of this year, while referring to the suppression of critics and protesters in Iran, said that hundreds of dervishes remain imprisoned in Iran due to their beliefs and some of them have been killed by ruthless security forces.
