A Cry for Peace from the Vatican; Pope Leo XIV Calls for Halt to Bombings in Iran and the Middle East

Pope Leo XIV, in cautionary remarks about the war in Iran and the Middle East, with a call for an immediate halt to bombings, stressed that the only way to end the crisis is the silencing of weapons and opening the path for dialogue.

While military clashes in Iran and parts of the Middle East have increased global concerns, Pope Leo XIV, leader of Catholics worldwide, expressing deep concern over the consequences of this war, called for an immediate end to military attacks and the beginning of peace talks.

He made these remarks on Sunday following the “Angelus” prayer ceremony in St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican in the presence of thousands of pilgrims and tourists. The Pope, referring to reports being published from Iran and across the Middle East, said these news have caused “deep concern and sorrow” and the world must not allow violence to turn into a wider crisis.

The leader of Catholics worldwide, in explicit remarks, called on the conflicting parties to return to the path of peace and emphasized: “Let the roar of bombs cease, let weapons be silenced and a space be opened for dialogue; a space in which the voice of people is heard.”

The Pope went on to warn about the widespread consequences of these clashes. According to him, the continuation of war not only causes destruction and suffering for people, but can also involve a wider region in instability.

Referring to the violent atmosphere created in the region, he criticized violent incidents, destruction and the widespread atmosphere of hatred and terror, and stressed that this process could bring more countries into crisis.

The Pope specifically named Lebanon and warned of the possibility of instability spreading to this country; a country that has repeatedly suffered from regional tensions in recent years.

Meanwhile, some Vatican officials have also expressed concern about the legal and humanitarian consequences of military attacks in the region. A senior Vatican diplomat has warned that preventive wars and military attacks can weaken the principles of international law and lead to the expansion of global instability.

Pope Leo XIV, in another part of his remarks, called on the faithful to pray for peace in these difficult days. He entrusted this call to the intercession of Mary, the mother of Jesus, who in Christian tradition is known as the “Queen of Peace.”

The Pope said in this part of his address: “May she intercede for those suffering from war and guide hearts on the path of reconciliation and hope.” He also reiterated that lasting peace comes not through the path of threats and weapons, but through sincere and responsible dialogue between nations.”

Pope Leo XIV’s remarks coincided with International Women’s Day on March 8th. In this part of his message, he referred to the situation of women in various parts of the world and called for respect for their dignity and equal status.

The leader of Catholics worldwide, citing biblical teachings on the equality of men and women, added: “Many women have faced various forms of violence and discrimination since childhood, and my solidarity and prayers are especially dedicated to them.”

The Pope also called on Christians not to remain silent in the face of discrimination and violence that women experience in many societies, and to stand beside them for justice and human dignity.

Pope Leo XIV’s recent statements are part of the Vatican’s ongoing efforts to emphasize peace in global crises. In recent weeks, he has repeatedly called on world political leaders to pursue diplomatic and humanitarian solutions instead of escalating conflicts.

With continued tensions in the Middle East, many religious leaders and international organizations have also expressed similar concerns. In such circumstances, the Vatican’s message once again reminds us that amid the noise of war, there is still a call for peace, prayer and reconciliation to be heard.
