Ahvaz Representative: Hawizeh Marsh Fire Extinguished After Temperature Drop Below 50 Degrees

The representative of Ahvaz in parliament reported that the fire in Hawizeh Marsh has been extinguished after the air temperature dropped below 50 degrees Celsius.

Ali Sari said on Sunday, September 25, in an interview with ISNA news agency that the fire had been completely extinguished several times before, but had reignited due to severe heat.

According to Mr. Sari, this marsh catches fire regularly when the weather warms up due to water shortage, and now with the temperature drop and temperatures falling below 50 degrees, the fire has been extinguished.

The Hawizeh Marsh fire began in June, and Iranian authorities cited Iraq’s lack of cooperation in extinguishing the fire through land and air operations and the presence of mines as reasons for the fire’s continuation.

According to some parliament representatives, including Hedayatollah Khademmi, representative of Izeh, the Hawizeh fire has various causes such as drought and dam construction by Turkey on the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.

Meanwhile, the Ahvaz representative in parliament said: “Negotiations should be held regarding water policies and foreign affairs issues with Turkey, away from dispute.”

According to officials from the Environmental Organization, dam construction policies in Turkey have created “dangerous conditions” for Hawizeh Marsh.

Hawizeh Marsh is located on the Iran-Iraq border and downstream of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, which originate from Turkish territory.

One-third of the Hawizeh border marsh is located in Iran and two-thirds of it is in Iraq.
