Another Group of Detainees from December 2019 Protests Sentenced to Prison

Eleven citizens of Amol, named Ali Shekari, Azadeh Javani, Alireza Mohammadnejad, Aydin Javani, Farshte Mahmudi, Hossein Mostafania, Maysam Khodabandelo, Hamid Mohammadi-Irani, Amin Forouhi, Mohammad Reza Shojaa, and Aida Javani, who were arrested during the December 2019 protests, have been sentenced to a total of 88 months in prison by the Revolutionary Court.

According to a report by the Iran Human Rights website and based on the issued court verdict, the prison sentence for these Amol residents was issued in absentia on Sunday, April 27, 2020 by Branch 1 of the Revolutionary Court of this county by Judge Morteza Mahdi, and was served to them on Monday, April 28, 2020.

Based on the issued ruling, each of these citizens was sentenced to 8 months in prison on the charge of “propaganda activity against the system.”

It should be noted that in this report, no information was provided regarding the time of detention or release of these individuals.

According to this report, the issued ruling was due to the presence of these citizens in the protests in December of last year in the main square of Amol and following the downing of Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 by a missile attack by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, which resulted in the death of 176 passengers on this flight.

Previously, Voice of America reported, citing the Iran Human Rights website, that five other Amol citizens who were arrested in these protests were also sentenced on Tuesday, April 21, 2020 in separate cases by the Revolutionary Court of this city headed by Judge Mahdi to 6 months in prison each on the charge of “propaganda against the system,” and this sentence was served to these individuals on Wednesday, April 22, 2020.

Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752, which on January 8, 2020 departed Tehran with 176 passengers bound for Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, crashed minutes after takeoff due to a missile attack by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps near Parand city in Tehran province, and all passengers on board, most of whom were Iranian, were killed.
