Arrest of Several Citizens by Razavi Khorasan IRGC on Charges of ‘Incitement to Gather’

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Razavi Khorasan province has announced that it has arrested several citizens on charges of “incitement to gathering and protest.”

In a statement issued by the IRGC on the evening of Friday, July 27, no reference was made to the location of detention or the number of those arrested. However, according to reports published about the possibility of gatherings in the city of Mashhad and the presence of special units throughout the city, it appears that the arrested individuals are residents of this city.

In its statement about the arrested individuals, the IRGC raised several other charges such as “espionage against national security, incitement to rioting and attempts to disrupt public order through cyberspace.”

The statement also identifies the arrested citizens as “key operatives of opposition groups” who, according to the IRGC, were “in contact with counter-revolutionary networks.”

In Iran, the practice of immediately leveling broad and undocumented charges against protesting citizens has always been on the agenda of military and security institutions.
