Arrest of Suspect in Acid Attack Case in Tehran

Hrana News Agency – On Monday, the 21st of Shahrivar, a man in the Tarshit neighborhood of Tehran, who had committed an acid attack against a young woman, was arrested. Acid is one of the few products whose buying and selling market in the country has never declined. In addition to the ease of access and availability of acid in Iran’s markets, the absence of sufficient preventive laws has also contributed to the continuation of the crime known as “acid attack.”

According to a report by Hrana News Agency, citing Tasnim, on Monday, the 21st of Shahrivar 1401, a man in the Tarshit neighborhood of Tehran, who had committed an acid attack against a woman, was arrested.

Based on this report, the young man, after carrying out the acid attack on a woman, went into hiding in a residential complex of Tehran University located in the Tarshit neighborhood.

Following the arrest of the suspect, police investigators stated that the suspect committed the acid attack as a result of hallucinations caused by the consumption of the narcotic drug crystal meth.

In this incident, the female victim of the acid attack suffered burns on her hands, body, and face.

Acid is one of the few products whose buying and selling market in the country has never declined. In addition to the ease of access and availability of acid in Iran’s markets, the absence of sufficient preventive laws has also contributed to the continuation of the crime known as “acid attack.”

Although a law regarding the punishment of acid attack crimes was passed in 1337, and in addition to that, the general provisions of Islamic Penal Code can also be used in criminalizing this inhumane act, evidence and circumstances suggest the ineffectiveness of existing laws in preventing it.

In late Ordibehesht 98, five of the seven articles of the plan to increase penalties for acid attacks and protect victims were approved by representatives in an open session of parliament.

After making amendments to the articles of this plan, ultimately on the 21st of Mehr 98, representatives of the Islamic Consultative Assembly, in an open session, reviewed and amended the plan to increase penalties for acid attacks and protect the victims thereof, which had been returned from the Guardian Council.

In Aban 98, after approval by the Guardian Council, this law was issued to the Ministry of Justice for implementation.
