Azerab Arak Workers’ Protests Continue Amid Intense Security Measures

Following the ongoing protests by Azerab Arak workers, reports indicate an intense security situation surrounding the company.

Labor sources reported on Tuesday, September 16, that for the third consecutive day, Azerab Arak workers staged protests on Tuesday.

According to a report by the Campaign to Defend the Detained of Haft Tapeh and Progressive Prisoners, police forces have surrounded the Azerab Arak company since Tuesday morning and prevented gatherings from being held outside the facility.

Reports on social media networks also indicate an intense security presence around the company. According to some reports, officers used tear gas against workers during previous days’ protests.

The Azerab Arak protests began in mid-September of this year. These workers, who had previously supported Hepco Arak workers in some of their demonstrations, had been summoned and threatened earlier.

Previously, ILNA reported details of these workers’ demands, noting that they have not received their salaries for the months of June and July, and are also claiming part of their May wages.

Worker protests in Iran have increased following currency fluctuations and mounting economic hardships, and Islamic Republic officials have recently acknowledged growing public discontent.

The United States has repeatedly condemned Iran’s security response to workers. The U.S. State Department stated in a message that the Islamic Republic regime could have paid workers’ wages in Iran with the expenses it incurred in Syria.
