Ban on Household Appliance Imports: Continuation of Individual Decisions with Collective Adverse Consequences

Iranian citizens have once again faced an unwanted restriction in their personal affairs: a ban on importing household appliances manufactured in South Korea. A restriction that could create numerous problems for society; from rising prices of household appliances and declining quality of substitute items, to the risk of unknown security threats in appliances manufactured in state-affiliated economic enterprises—all are visible and hidden challenges of this decision.
Hamid Asafi, a researcher of political and economic affairs, told Voice of America that referring to the precedent of the Islamic Republic’s leader entering specialized decision-making domains, this recent decision means that “apparently negotiations are not expected to take place and sanctions cannot be lifted so easily,” as a result, Islamic Republic officials are thinking of “a monopoly market” under slogans of “self-sufficiency, support for national production, and so on.”
The recent order by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the leader of the Islamic Republic, was issued on Thursday, even though he has previously intervened multiple times in specialized domains and exposed Iranian citizens’ lives to numerous dangers. However, in his speeches, he apparently claims to lack expertise.
