Behbahan Court Upholds 13-Year Prison Sentences for Three November 2019 Protesters

A court in Behbahan has upheld 13-year prison sentences for three individuals who were arrested during the November 2019 protests.

According to Hrana news agency, Setar Afshinpur, Bahman Amini, and Mohammad Tayebi have each been sentenced to 74 lashes as well.

According to the court ruling, Setar Afshinpur was sentenced to 11 years in prison and 74 lashes on charges of “destruction and burning of banks and public places and disrupting public order.”

In two other cases, Bahman Amini and Mohammad Tayebi were each sentenced to one year in prison and 74 lashes on charges of “participation in disrupting public order.”

Behbahan courts had previously issued conviction sentences for 36 protesters arrested during the November 2019 protests.

The case of these three individuals was among the rulings issued for 36 defendants, and following their appeal, the final verdict in their cases has been issued.

During the street protests in November 2019, hundreds of protesters, some of whom were children, were killed by gunfire from security forces and police in several Iranian cities.

Islamic Republic officials have not yet released accurate figures on the death toll from these protests, but Reuters reported at the time, citing informed sources, that at least 1,500 people were killed during these protests.

During these clashes, multiple reports emerged from Behbahan of confrontations between police and protesters, and violent encounters between security and law enforcement personnel with the public.
