Body of Iranian Refugee Found After One Month in British Accommodation Center

The body of an Iranian refugee was discovered in a British accommodation center after being found in his room after one month.

According to official data, the number of deaths of refugees living in British government accommodation centers has increased more than 12 times compared to 2019 figures. In 2023, the number of refugee deaths was recorded at 4 people, which increased to 51 people in 2024, while during the same period the number of asylum applications also increased more than twofold.

According to published information, in the past year (2024) many of these refugees lost their lives in the accommodation centers of the British Home Office. According to the Guardian report, the number of deaths in 2024 in these centers was around 11 more compared to 2023. The Home Office had reported only 30 deaths in 2024, but after new information was released, the data was corrected and subsequently apologized as 21 people were added to the previous number.

Deborah Coles, director of the Inquest charity organization responsible for supporting the families of people who died in government centers, responded to these incidents saying: “The British Home Office not only has no proper oversight and accountability for these tragic deaths, but is completely indifferent to the lives of these vulnerable people. Whether the incorrect information provided by the Home Office was an unintentional mistake or a deliberate attempt to cover it up remains unclear. However, in any case, this behavior demonstrates severe neglect of the vulnerable situation of refugees.”

Now, according to published reports, the body of an Iranian man whose identity has not yet been determined was found in this center after one month. He lived in a shared residence in Colchester and after a month of silence, his roommates noticed a foul smell from his room and immediately contacted the police. After the police arrived, it was determined that a month had passed since his death and no one had even noticed his death.

Government sources also confirmed that the body of the aforementioned Iranian refugee remained in his room for one month. This is while the British Home Office refuses to answer questions about whether the bodies of some refugees have been discovered after long periods.

Human rights organizations and refugee support organizations asked the British government to provide greater transparency on this matter. This is while the British Home Office, unlike the Ministry of Justice which publishes information about prisoner deaths, does not publish data related to refugee deaths.

While the House of Commons Home Affairs Committee is reviewing conditions for refugee accommodation in these centers, the Asylum Matters charity has also asked this committee to provide greater transparency about these refugee deaths.

Madi Harris from the Humans for Rights Network organization, which supports refugees, called for immediate government clarification on the exact number of deaths in response to this incident. He said on this matter: “The Home Office must immediately clarify how many refugees in the asylum system and under its care have lost their lives. This information should be released transparently and preventatively, not as it currently is, completely lacking in transparency.”

The British Home Office also stated on this matter: “All these deaths are reviewed on a standard basis by relevant authorities, including police and forensics, to determine the exact cause of death.” The Home Office also emphasized that organizations providing accommodation services to refugees are required to conduct regular inspections of residents’ welfare conditions and report any issues to authorities.
