Boeing Company: We Will Not Deliver Aircraft to Iran

A Boeing spokesperson announced that the company will not deliver any aircraft to Iran due to U.S. sanctions. Boeing had signed a contract with Iran for the delivery of 80 passenger aircraft to the country.

A Boeing spokesperson stated on Wednesday (June 6 / Khordad 16) that the company is complying with U.S. sanctions and no longer has the necessary permission to sell aircraft to Iran.

The Boeing spokesperson added that the company has not delivered any aircraft to Iran so far, and since it no longer has permission to sell aircraft to the country, it will not deliver any aircraft to Iran.

The aircraft purchase agreement was signed in autumn 2016 between Iran Air (IrAn Air) and Boeing. According to this agreement, Boeing was supposed to deliver 80 passenger aircraft worth approximately 16 billion dollars to Iran over a 10-year period.

In 2017, Iran was supposed to receive 6 of these aircraft, but this did not materialize. Boeing’s contract with Iran had been signed with the approval of the then-U.S. administration. The Minister of Roads and Urban Development stated after signing the contract with Boeing that Iran’s contract with Boeing was a commercial agreement and would not be cancelled by a U.S. presidential order.

Before signing the contract with Boeing, Iran had also signed an agreement with French aircraft manufacturer Airbus for the purchase of 118 aircraft worth more than 10 billion dollars. Iran has received several of these aircraft so far and is scheduled to receive the remaining 118 aircraft by 2024.

Following the United States’ withdrawal from the JCPOA and the return of sanctions against Iran, Airbus deliveries to Iran have also been shrouded in uncertainty, as some of Airbus’s important components are manufactured in the United States, and if the U.S. government refuses, Airbus will not have permission to sell to Iran.

The contracts with Airbus and Boeing were signed after the nuclear agreement was signed in July 2015 and began implementation from the beginning of 2016. Following the announcement of the U.S. withdrawal from the JCPOA on May 8, 2018, Steven Mnuchin, U.S. Treasury Secretary, announced that with Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the JCPOA, Boeing and Airbus contracts with Iran would also be cancelled.
