British Foreign Secretary: Iran Should Return to JCPOA Negotiations as Soon as Possible

In the first meeting between Iranian and British foreign ministers, Liz Truss, Britain’s Foreign Secretary, called for Iran’s swift return to the JCPOA. On the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, Amir-Abdollahian also met with Ireland’s Foreign Minister.

Britain’s government spokesperson announced on Wednesday evening, September 22, the meeting between Liz Trass, Britain’s Foreign Secretary, and Amir-Abdollahian, Iran’s Foreign Minister, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

According to Reuters, Liz Trass called on Iran to return as soon as possible to the negotiating table for the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in Vienna. She emphasized that the goal is to achieve compliance with the JCPOA by all parties and reduce tensions over Iran’s nuclear program.

According to Britain’s government spokesperson, the foreign ministers of the two countries also discussed bilateral relations and regional issues during this meeting.

“Very Clear Determination”

Ireland’s Foreign Minister also spoke of “very clear determination” by his Iranian counterpart to return to nuclear negotiations following a similar meeting.

Simon Coveney, Ireland’s Foreign Minister, stressed after this meeting in front of journalists: “This may not happen in the coming weeks, because Tehran’s new government has not yet made a final decision on its approach to negotiations. But certainly he (Amir-Abdollahian) has very clear determination to return to the negotiating table.”

Ireland is currently a member of the UN Security Council and is carrying out the coordinating work of a fifteen-member working group that is responsible for addressing issues related to the 2015 nuclear agreement between Tehran, Britain, China, France, and Germany.
