Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant Temporarily Shut Down

A spokesman for Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization announced that the Bushehr nuclear power plant has been “temporarily” shut down and disconnected from Iran’s national electricity grid for fuel replacement and necessary repairs.
According to ISNA, Behrouz Kamalvandi, spokesman for Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, stated that the shutdown of this power plant will last approximately two months.
Earlier, Mohammad Ahmadian, deputy head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, had said that the Bushehr nuclear power plant is currently facing “multiple problems” and its operation in the coming year will be accompanied by “uncertainties.”
Construction of the Bushehr nuclear power plant began before the revolution with German design, but was halted for a period after the 1979 revolution and was subsequently handed over to Russia for completion. The power plant was finally connected to Iran’s national electricity grid after 16 years in 2011.
The nominal power generation capacity of the Bushehr plant is 1,000 megawatts per year, but the current output of this power plant is below this level. According to reports, the Bushehr power plant generates approximately 2 percent of Iran’s electricity consumption.
