Catholic Priest ‘Mirko Intiglia’ Threatened with Death in Sydney

After ‘Mirko Intiglia,’ a Catholic priest in Sydney, expressed solidarity with Jewish victims in response to recent violence, he faced serious death threats from extremists; an incident that once again highlighted concerns about rising religious tensions and the safety of religious leaders in multicultural communities.

Following escalating religious tensions in Australia, Father ‘Mirko Intiglia,’ priest of the ‘Holy Cross’ church located in Bondi Junction, received a threatening letter last week from an unknown person or persons. The letter, which contained violent language and direct death threats, has raised serious concerns about the safety of religious leaders. In part of this message, the threatening party warned that if he continued his remarks about Islam, his life would be in danger.

Reports indicate that these threats came in response to this priest’s previous positions. He had previously reacted in a public note to recent deadly violence, and by referring to innocent victims, emphasized the difficulty of holding celebrations under such circumstances. These remarks, which were expressed in a sympathetic tone toward the victims, including a slain child, received widespread public resonance.

In response to these threats, New South Wales police authorities have increased protective measures for the priest and his family. Security sources have announced that investigations to identify the perpetrator or perpetrators of these threats are ongoing.

The Holy Cross Church also issued a statement strongly condemning this act, viewing it as a sign of spreading fear and hatred. The statement noted that Father Intiglia has served the community for years and has played an important role in providing spiritual support to families and affected individuals; therefore, such threats are considered not only against one person, but against the human and spiritual values of the community.

Members of the church plan to hold a special ceremony in the coming days to express solidarity and send a clear message against violence and extremism. The organizers of this event have emphasized that the goal is to strengthen unity and stand against fear.

Meanwhile, representatives of the Sydney Catholic Church, expressing concern over this incident, have emphasized everyone’s right to worship in a safe environment. They have also called for broad cooperation among religious leaders and social institutions to counter extremism and preserve peaceful coexistence in society.

This incident occurs at a time when in recent months, multiple cases of religious tensions and verbal or physical attacks against various religious groups have been reported in Western countries; an issue that has drawn the attention of international bodies and advocates of religious freedom and has further highlighted the necessity of interfaith dialogue and strengthening a culture of mutual respect.
