Coronavirus Crisis Management in 98 Countries: “New Zealand First, Iran 95th”

According to findings by an Australian research institute, New Zealand, Vietnam, and Taiwan have managed the coronavirus crisis best. Three factors were examined for the research. The evaluation of Iran’s official data has placed this country at rank 95.

According to assessments and estimates by the Lowy Institute in Australia, New Zealand has achieved the best crisis management in dealing with the coronavirus outbreak.

Following New Zealand, other countries from the same East Asian and Pacific region have been ranked at the top of the list. Vietnam is in second place, and Taiwan and Thailand are third and fourth, respectively.

Sweden, with its relatively different strategy that avoided imposing restrictions as much as possible and pursued controlled herd immunity relying on citizens’ sense of personal responsibility, stands at 35th place.

The number of countries included in this comparison table is 98, with Iran ranking 95th, following the United States and ahead of three countries at the bottom of the list: Colombia, Mexico, and Brazil.

The Lowy Institute’s assessments and the preparation of the list were based on official statistics from countries. In this regard, China is not on the list due to lack of access to data regarding the number of people who have been tested.

Given the constant emphasis by domestic and international sources that Iran’s actual figures are much higher than the officially announced numbers, it is unclear how realistic Iran’s position in this list is.

Iran stands at rank 95 in this list, one place below the United States.

For this research, the figures and measures of each country within 36 weeks after the 100th confirmed case was recorded in each of these countries were examined.

The researchers focused, among other things, on statistics and figures that each country had published during the mentioned 36 weeks regarding the number of infected people, death toll, and the number of people tested.

Germany stands at 54th place in this Lowy Institute list.

The Lowy Institute was established in 2003 and is headquartered in Sydney, Australia.
