Coronavirus in Iran: Shadow of Potential Entry into New Wave of COVID-19 in the Country

According to a statement on Sunday by the Public Relations and Information Center of Iran’s Ministry of Health, 126 people died from coronavirus in the past 24 hours and 7,554 people were also infected with the disease.

These are official figures, and previously, government agencies stated that the actual number is at least twice these official figures. These numbers show a slight increase compared to the previous day and indicate the continuation of fluctuating coronavirus statistics in the country.

Officials and health experts previously compared the fluctuating coronavirus figures in recent days and weeks to the pandemic process before the peak of the deadly fifth wave in the months of Mordad and Shahrivar, and warned of this.

Given the decline in adherence to health protocols, the beginning of a new peak is not far-fetched.

Tasnim News Agency, citing these experts, wrote that a significant decrease in public participation in adhering to health protocols and also a significant change in the color-coding of cities regarding coronavirus conditions could bring major concerns for reducing the costs of the next peak, which apparently government officials, to prevent these concerns, have considered the smart quarantine plan, which is scheduled to be officially activated from the beginning of Azar 1400.

According to Tasnim, one of the first steps could be to impose restrictions on services to people who have not received the coronavirus vaccine or do not have proof of a negative test, for example in the public transportation system, in order to reduce the movement of high-risk individuals and facilitate prevention and more active fight against the virus.

Many countries have created applications to monitor infected individuals and red and high-risk areas, but no such measures have been taken in Iran.

In the past year, the authorities of the Islamic Republic have faced criticism from the people. A year ago, Ayatollah Khamenei, the leader of the Islamic Republic, prohibited the entry of Western vaccines, but after ten months changed his position and said that there is no problem if these vaccines enter from other countries. Some critics say that the delay in vaccination has led to the deaths of thousands of people in Iran.

While the possibility of a new wave of coronavirus in Iran has caused concern, Iranian media are reporting the confirmation of the reopening of schools and universities in person from the first of Azar.

This is while the number of red coronavirus cities in Iran is increasing.

According to the Ministry of Health, currently 33 cities in the country are in red condition, 95 cities are in orange condition, 220 cities are in yellow condition, and 100 cities are in blue condition.
