Deputy Prosecutor of Mashhad Reports Case of 30 Children Who Have Been Sexually Abused and Assaulted

The deputy prosecutor of Mashhad has stated that during the implementation of a plan called “Canopy of Hope,” 30 children who have been subjected to “sexual abuse and assault” have been supported.

Nirah Abedinzadeh, who spoke with ISNA news agency on Monday, November 12, did not clarify the time period to which the assault and sexual abuse cases of these children belong, but stated that the minimum sentence for perpetrators in these cases is flogging and the maximum punishment is execution.

She also reported on the implementation of a plan to organize child laborers and stated that in the past week in Mashhad, 85 child laborers were identified, “of which 24 were Iranian children and 61 were foreign nationals.”

Ms. Abedinzadeh also reported the arrest of 5 people who, according to her, were “leaders” of these children.

She stated that some of the leaders, by exploiting children, earn 10 million tomans per night, and “ultimately, 20,000 tomans reaches the child.”

The deputy prosecutor of Mashhad emphasized that some of the identified children may have been “subjected to sexual abuse, harassment, and assault,” and there are signs of beatings on their bodies.

Mahmoud Abbasi, Deputy Minister of Justice of Iran, also stated on November 11 that the situation of child laborers in Sistan and Baluchestan and Khorasan Razavi provinces is “catastrophic” and the number of child laborers in these provinces is “very large.”

This official did not provide statistics in this regard and stated that most government statistics presented on child laborers are inaccurate.

In Iran, the statistics of child laborers and the definition of individuals recognized as child laborers are not clear and precise.

Government officials and municipalities say there are approximately half a million child laborers in Iran, while non-governmental organizations say we have 7 million child laborers in Iran.
