Discovery of Sassanid-Era Inscription at Naqsh-e Rostam

The director of the Persepolis World Heritage Site announced the discovery of a Sassanid inscription in the historical complex of Naqsh-e Rostam in Fars Province.
Hamid Fadaei said on Sunday, April 27, in an interview with ILNA news agency that the inscription is written in “Pahlavi-Sassanid script” and suggested that other inscriptions may be discovered at this location.
The announcement of the discovery of an inscription at this complex in 2018 also drew the attention of archaeologists.
The trilingual inscription, which contained information about military clothing and equipment, was considered highly significant by researchers for understanding the Achaemenid period.
According to Hamid Fadaei, the Naqsh-e Rostam complex contains numerous artifacts from the Elamite, Achaemenid, and Sassanid periods, which are being gradually discovered.
He also stated that due to a prolonged drought in the country and excessive extraction of groundwater in Marvdasht County, there were concerns about “sinkholes in Naqsh-e Rostam and the Persepolis complex,” but these concerns have decreased following increased rainfall.
He said that 15 years ago, the groundwater level in Marvdasht was approximately 20 meters, but now it has reached depths exceeding 200 meters.
