Earthquake in Bushehr | Ganava Shaken Over 20 Times; Concerns Over Earthquake Victims’ Accommodation and Coronavirus Risk

A 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck Ganava city in Bushehr province, but according to Islamic Republic officials, the damage was minor and there were no casualties.

The earthquake occurred at 11:11 AM on Sunday, April 19, and was also felt in other cities in Bushehr province as well as in Fars province.

So far, the number of aftershocks in Ganava has exceeded 20, with 7 earthquakes measuring over 4 on the Richter scale.

The Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant’s public relations department also issued a statement confirming that no damage was caused to the facility.

The occurrence of this earthquake at a time when Bushehr province, like many other regions in Iran, is in the “red” coronavirus alert status has raised concerns. Gholamreza Mehrjou, governor of Ganava, told IRNA news agency: “Considering the coronavirus situation and avoiding gatherings, if an aftershock occurs at night, we will use sports facilities in the city and villages.”

On the same day, the head of Bushehr University of Medical Sciences told Tasnim news agency that the number of daily positive cases of coronavirus patients in the past week has increased five and a half times, and the number of deaths has increased four times compared to last month of the previous year.

According to this local official, “the normal capacity of hospitals in Bushehr province is currently being filled.”
