Empress Farah Pahlavi: Marriage of Girls Under 18 is Horrific

Empress Farah Pahlavi described regulations regarding women in Iran as “horrific” and said that before the revolution, women were granted freedoms and opportunities that did not even exist in societies like the United States.
Empress Farah Pahlavi, in a detailed conversation with Setareh Derakhshan, head of the Persian section of Voice of America, referred to the status of women in Iran and, among other things, described the removal of the law prohibiting marriage of girls under 18 years old as horrific and unacceptable.
She also did not consider her appointment to the position of “Regent” by Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi as a personal honor and said: I did not think that His Majesty placed the crown on my head, but rather my feeling was that this crown was placed on the heads of women and was a sign of the importance that His Majesty gave to women’s rights.
In another section of this interview, Empress Farah Pahlavi referred to the special importance of sports in her life and stated that she has made all efforts to not allow “bitterness” to enter her heart despite all difficulties and hardships. She emphasized that she considers it her duty to remain “positive and healthy” so that those who brought these calamities upon her family and the Iranian people will not be pleased.
