European Union to Add More Iranian Officials to Sanctions List

The European Union is imposing sanctions against several more Iranian officials due to human rights violations. These individuals will be denied entry to EU territory and all their assets will be frozen. The names of these individuals will be announced next week.
Three European Union diplomats have stated that the names of several people will soon be announced against whom the union intends to impose sanctions. They did not mention the names of the individuals or details of the matter.
On Wednesday (March 31), the sanctions imposed against more than 80 Iranians who are subject to sanctions will be renewed by the European Union.
The European Union, like the United States, has imposed sanctions against a number of Iranians since 2011 due to human rights violations.
The European Union is determined to take a more decisive approach against human rights violations around the world. This month, the union imposed sanctions against 11 people from China, North Korea, Libya, and Russia.
A European Union diplomat said in this regard: “Those responsible for human rights violations should know that their actions will have consequences for them.”
The European Union has repeatedly protested against human rights violations in Iran, including the detention of political opponents and restrictions on freedom of thought and expression.
The last time the European Union imposed sanctions against a number of Iranians was in 2013.
In September of last year, Britain, Germany, and France, in an unprecedented move, protested the Islamic Republic’s human rights violations by summoning Iran’s ambassadors in these countries. In this connection, France’s Foreign Minister stated that Iran “seriously and continuously” violates human rights principles.
On March 9, Javaid Rehman, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran, presented an official document pointing to violations of fundamental human rights principles, such as: high rates of capital punishment, execution of juveniles, the use of torture to extract confessions from prisoners, and the legalization of forced marriage of young girls.
The Islamic Republic has consistently rejected these allegations and stated that it does not recognize “Western human rights.”
European Union diplomats have stated that the announcement of sanctions against Iranian citizens is unrelated to issues and implications of the nuclear agreement (JCPOA).
