Financial Sanctions and Travel Ban Against 5 Iranian Citizens by Australian Government

The Australian government has issued financial sanctions and travel bans against 5 Iranian citizens on the second anniversary of Mahsa Amini’s death.

Penny Wong, Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, announced targeted financial sanctions and travel bans against 5 Iranian citizens on Monday, September 16.

Penny Wong issued a statement on the Australian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website, declaring: “On the second anniversary of the tragic detention and death of Mahsa ‘Zhina’ Amini, the Australian government has imposed targeted financial sanctions and travel bans on five Iranian citizens. The individuals sanctioned today include senior security and military officials who have been complicit in the violent suppression of protests in Iran.”

In the statement released by the Australian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it is stated: “The human rights situation in Iran is dire, particularly for women and girls. In early 2024, Iranian authorities launched a new campaign to enforce mandatory hijab laws through increased surveillance and harassment. Female human rights activists remain in detention and face death sentences. These sanctions demonstrate the government’s commitment to holding Iran accountable for human rights violations and other destabilizing activities. Australia stands alongside Iranian women and girls in their struggle for equality and empowerment.”
