Floods in Kaleibar Claim Three Lives and Cause Severe Damage

Iranian news agencies have reported serious damage from floods in four villages and infrastructure facilities in Kaleibar County, located in East Azerbaijan Province. Three people have lost their lives. More than 200 head of livestock, both small and large, have been lost.

IRNA news agency reported on the severe damage caused by floods on Sunday, August 8, in various regions of East Azerbaijan Province. According to this report, three people were killed, aged 13, 15, and 60 years old.

Adel Hajipour, the governor of Kaleibar, stated that floods occurred in four villages: Gavar, Sahrieh, Arabshahkhan, and Chay Kandi, causing serious damage to Kaleibar’s infrastructure facilities, including the gas transmission line, electricity, drinking water, and the county’s water treatment plant.

On Sunday evening, due to heavy rainfall in a short period of time, floods swept through the region, catching residents off guard. In addition to infrastructure, gardens, fields, livestock, some houses, and people’s vehicles also suffered severe damage.

The Meteorological Organization warned on Sunday of temporary water accumulation, strong winds, and sudden flooding in 12 provinces of Iran.

Among these regions are the northern half of West Azerbaijan, East Azerbaijan, Ardabil, Zanjan, Hamadan, the northern half of Fars, eastern Kurdistan, Lorestan, southwestern Isfahan, eastern Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari, and the highlands of Mazandaran.

Due to deforestation and environmental degradation in Iran, every heavy rainfall in the country, instead of replenishing natural water resources, leads to flooding and destruction of people’s property and assets.

Heavy rains in spring this year affected Tehran, Razavi Khorasan, South Khorasan, Kerman, Semnan, Isfahan, and Yazd provinces with floods and water accumulation. In addition to damage to houses, vehicles, and roads, a number of citizens in the mentioned provinces went missing.
