Ali Tajerniya, a reformist representative in the sixth parliament, stated that “influential figures who play a role in the power structure” have sent a message to Hassan Rouhani, Iran’s president, not to run in the upcoming presidential election.
Mr. Tajerniya emphasized in an interview with Arman newspaper: “From all corners, it is heard that some are sending messages directly and indirectly to Mr. Rouhani to dissuade him from continuing his presidency in a second term.”
This former parliament representative did not provide further details about those who, according to him, have sent a “message” to Iran’s president not to run.
In his interview, Ali Tajerniya identified the “most important strategy of conservatives” as “exhausting and deterring Hassan Rouhani from continuing his presidency.” He added: “For this reason, they are trying to use all their potential and capabilities to pressure Mr. Rouhani’s government.”
Hassan Rouhani’s relations with conservative critics of the eleventh administration have become increasingly tense for some time, particularly following the comprehensive nuclear agreement between Iran and world powers.
During this period, a faction of appointees of Iran’s Islamic Republic leader has subjected Mr. Rouhani’s performance in various fields, including foreign policy, to severe criticism.
Iran’s next presidential election will be held next year.
