Fourth Iran-Iraq War Veteran Self-Immolates in Qom

The Qom News website reported the self-immolation of the fourth Iran-Iraq war veteran in less than three months in Qom. The individual, whose name was not disclosed, died due to severe burns.

The website wrote: “This war-disabled veteran with a disability rating of 45 percent set himself on fire in his home in Qom in the middle of last week.”

According to the report, despite transferring the individual to Isfahan’s burn hospital and the efforts of physicians, medical treatment proved unsuccessful.

This marks the fourth case of self-immolation among Iran-Iraq war veterans from Qom in less than three months.

The first self-immolation occurred in the second month of the Persian calendar at the entrance of the office of the Director General of the “Martyrs Foundation and Veterans Affairs” in Qom. The second and third self-immolations took place in Tehran and Qom respectively.

On the fourth day of the current Persian month, officials of the “Martyrs Foundation” of the Islamic Republic confirmed that a “martyr’s child” in the city of Qom self-immolated and died after his request for hospital admission was rejected.

Iranian media had previously reported that a 47-year-old “martyr’s child” self-immolated in the building of the Martyrs Foundation in Qom’s province by pouring gasoline on himself.

According to Mohammad Eyni, Deputy of the Martyrs Foundation in Qom, the individual visited a hospital in Qom one night before his self-immolation and requested admission, but “since admission must be done on a doctor’s orders, the hospital did not accept him.”

This Martyrs Foundation official did not provide further details about this matter, including the reason for the individual’s request for hospital admission, and only stated that “based on documents at our disposal” this person “was admitted once to a psychiatric hospital in Ardabil and four times to Ali Ibn Abi Talib Hospital in Qom.”

Qom News website, referring to the three previous self-immolation cases, wrote: “Three self-immolation tragedies within a period of approximately forty days by veterans covered by the Martyrs Foundation and Veterans Affairs of Qom Province, resulting from their absolute desperation and hopelessness about solving their problems, indicate the poor performance of the Martyrs Foundation in Qom in providing support services in the fields of medical care, psychological and legal counseling to the veterans under its coverage.”

The website called for “a review of the management of this office in the province before other incidents occur.”
