Germany, Britain and France: Iran must end 20% uranium enrichment

Germany, Britain and France have demanded that Iran immediately halt uranium enrichment. These countries have stated that Iran’s action of enriching uranium to 20% violates the international nuclear agreement, the JCPOA.

Germany, Britain and France, the European troika and signatories to the JCPOA nuclear agreement in 2015, expressed concern on Wednesday, January 6 (December 17) by issuing a joint statement about the beginning of uranium enrichment at 20% level at the Fordow nuclear facility.

The statement said that this Iranian action has no valid non-military justification and constitutes a clear violation of Iran’s JCPOA commitments.

The European troika of Britain, France and Germany, unlike the United States which has withdrawn from the JCPOA, remain committed to the agreement’s obligations. However, these countries warned in their statement and called on Iran to stop uranium enrichment as soon as possible to avoid jeopardizing the important opportunity of returning to diplomacy with the incoming US administration.

Ali Rabiei, spokesman for the Iranian government, announced on Monday, December 15 that on the order of the president, the process of gas injection at the Fordow plant had begun and within hours “the first enriched uranium product” would be produced.

Rabiei also said that the 20% enrichment process was carried out following notification to the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Iran’s action has raised the concerns of European countries, particularly Iran’s neighboring countries.
