According to Hrana News Agency, the news outlet of a collection of human rights activists in Iran, 53 member states of the UN Human Rights Council called on the Iranian government to cease using force against peaceful citizen protests in Iran.
Chile’s delegation presented this joint statement on Iran’s situation on behalf of Spain and a group of countries from various regions.
The signatory countries expressed concern over the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman who was detained by the morality police solely for what was called “inappropriate hijab.” These countries also condemned the use of force against women and called it a denial of human dignity.
The signatory countries to this statement earnestly requested Iran’s authorities to end discrimination and violence against women. They added in this statement: “All serious allegations must be fully investigated. We call on Iranian authorities to align laws with international human rights standards. We insist that an independent, impartial, and transparent investigation be conducted into the death of Ms. Amini so that those responsible are identified and access to justice and truth is provided for Ms. Amini and her family.”
