In the Fourth Week of Labor Strikes, 105,000 Iranian Workers Issue New Statement

A strike by thousands of contract and project workers in Iran’s oil, gas, and petrochemical sectors entered its fourth week on Sunday, July 20.

The strike began on June 19, and according to reports, workers from more than 100 companies across 12 provinces have so far ceased work in protest of living conditions and to achieve their demands.

Meanwhile, it has been reported that 105,000 contract and company employees of the oil sector have launched a campaign on social media calling for the elimination of contractor and intermediary companies.

According to the ILNA news agency, the workers’ statement says that employees working in state-owned companies under the Ministry of Oil are demanding the abolition of contractor companies supplying labor to government agencies by converting their contract status.

Contract and company workers at the Ministry of Oil have previously complained of “discrimination and disparity” in receiving wages and benefits compared to other employees.

Contract and project workers are demanding wage increases and extended leave, elimination of contractor companies, reinstatement of laid-off workers, compliance with health and safety standards in workplaces, dormitories and sanitary facilities, improvement of workplace safety principles, and recognition of the right to organize and assemble.

The strikes by Iranian workers have so far enjoyed extensive domestic and international support.
