India Reports Discovery of Nearly $2.72 Billion in Heroin Smuggled Through Bandar Abbas

Indian officials announced on Tuesday, September 30, the discovery of nearly three tons of heroin that originated from Afghanistan and had been transported to the country through Bandar Abbas in southern Iran.
According to these officials, the confiscated narcotics from this shipment have a substantial value of $2.72 billion, making this shipment one of the largest illegal consignments ever discovered in India.
Officials from Gujarat state said that the shipment was transferred by Afghan nationals under the guise of semi-processed talc stones from Afghanistan through Bandar Abbas, Iran, to Mundra Port in Gujarat, and forensic medical tests confirmed the presence of more than 2,988 kilograms of heroin in it.
Relevant authorities in India say that after receiving information about two containers at Mundra Port, they succeeded in discovering these substances and arrested two Afghan nationals in this connection, with interrogation of them still ongoing.
The discovery of this large shipment coincides with the chaos prevailing over the situation in Afghanistan that has emerged following the Taliban group’s takeover of the country’s government last month.
Afghanistan is the world’s largest source of illegal narcotics.
Taliban group leaders have said they intend to prohibit drug trafficking, without providing further details on how this decision will be implemented.
