Inflation Rate Exceeding 40% in 1400; Raisi Blames Price Hikes on ‘Behind-the-Scenes Actors’

Iran’s president on Wednesday expressed “dissatisfaction” with the recent increase in prices of essential goods and, attributing these price hikes to “behind-the-scenes actors,” asked supervisory bodies to identify them.

Ebrahim Raisi said on Wednesday during a cabinet meeting that “arbitrary price increases are unjustifiable,” adding: “It is unacceptable for a private company or factory to suddenly increase the price of its goods.”

The Wednesday statements by the 13th administration’s chief come as prices of essential goods continue their upward trajectory and price hikes persist daily. This occurs even as the Statistical Center of Iran released a new report on the same day, announcing the annual inflation rate for the year 1400 as 40.2%, a figure that represents a 3.8% increase compared to the previous year.

This figure was reported as 3.5% for urban areas and 5.1% for rural areas.

According to a report by Iran’s Statistical Center, the inflation rate for “food, beverages and tobacco” in the year 1400 was 51.1% nationwide, reported as 52.1% in urban areas and 49.4% in rural areas.

Latest data from Iran’s Statistical Center from last year also shows that “inflation for low-income earners” in 1400 was higher than for the wealthy. In other words, the inflation observed in the spending basket of low-income groups was considerably higher than inflation for high-income deciles, with a primary reason being the sharp increase in food items in the spending basket of low-income groups.

Nearing eight months into the 13th administration of the Islamic Republic and despite promises for an “immediate” solution to economic problems, market conditions and public welfare indicate accelerating prices and further declining purchasing power among citizens, to the point that even some supporters of Ebrahim Raisi have joined his critics.
