Iran Border Official Asks Afghan Migrants to ‘Stay in Their Own Country Until Their Problems Are Resolved’

The deputy commander of the border police of Iran’s Islamic Republic police force says “an average of 2,000” Afghan migrants “apply at the borders daily to enter Iran,” but “most are returned to their own country.”

According to ISNA news agency, Brigadier General Jalal Setareh said Afghan migrants “are treated with full respect and dignity,” but called on the people of Afghanistan to “not apply at the borders and stay in their own country until their problems are resolved.”

Following the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, a significant number of the country’s people have left across its borders in recent days. Some countries have announced they are willing to accept a specific number of Afghan refugees.

In contrast, Turkey recently announced that due to concerns about a possible influx of Afghan refugees fleeing Taliban fighters, it is increasing security measures at its borders with Iran and deploying more soldiers to these areas.
