Iran’s “Dangerous Nowruz”: Flood Warnings for Six Provinces; Snow and Rain in 19 Other Provinces

While flooding in parts of Golestan and Mazandaran provinces continues and part of the flood has entered Gorgan Airport, warnings have been issued about the possibility of floods in 6 provinces, and 19 other Iranian provinces are experiencing snow and rain.
This weather condition has led the head of Iran’s Red Crescent Society to describe this year’s Nowruz as a “Dangerous Nowruz.”
Iran’s Meteorological Organization has warned that in the coming days, at least 9 Iranian provinces face the risk of flooding, and except for the eastern parts of the country, rainfall will occur in other areas.
Meanwhile, Ali-Asghar Peyoandi, head of Iran’s Red Crescent Society, has described the new year holidays in Iran as a “Dangerous Nowruz.”
In recent days, heavy rainfall has caused floods in several areas of Iran, and at least 11 people have been killed in the city of Shiraz.
According to the Meteorological Organization’s announcement, the provinces of Isfahan, Ilam, Bushehr, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari, Khuzestan, Fars, Lorestan, Kurdistan, and Kermanshah face the risk of flooding.
Hasan Razavi, CEO of Tehran’s Regional Water Company, told FARS News Agency that “the possibility of heavy rainfall and the occurrence of destructive floods in rivers and torrents across Tehran province is not far-fetched.” At the same time, the CEO of Alborz’s Regional Water Company also warned of the possibility of river overflow and floods in that province.
Earlier, Elham Fakhhari, a member of Tehran City Council, had warned on her Twitter page about the occurrence of a storm in Tehran.
A meteorological official in Golestan province also told Tasnim that for the coming days, “a temperature drop of 8 to 10 degrees” is expected in the province, as well as “rainfall, snow, and strong winds,” and there is a possibility of “more flooding in urban streets.”
According to Iran’s Traffic Police announcement, 22 main roads in the country are currently closed. According to statistics so far, at least 9 people in northern Iran, one person in Lorestan, and 17 people in Shiraz have died.
