Iran’s Judiciary Declares Marzieh Amiri’s Charges ‘Security-Related’

After approximately 20 days since the arrest of Marzieh Amiri, a journalist from Shargh newspaper, the spokesperson of Iran’s Judiciary declared her charges to be “security-related.”

According to ISNA, Gholamhossein Esmaili said on Tuesday, May 21, regarding the fact that Marzieh Amiri is not allowed to meet with a lawyer, that “a criminal act in the field of security has been attributed to her, and in this regard, not just any lawyer can represent her.”

Marzieh Amiri is a journalist and social sciences student at Tehran University who went to the Vezarat Police Station on International Workers’ Day to follow up on the status of detainees, where she was arrested and transferred to Ward 209 of Evin Prison.

However, reports indicate that she has been unable to access a lawyer during this period.

Iran’s Judiciary previously announced by circulating a list of “approved lawyers” to prosecutors’ offices that defendants in political and security cases can only select lawyers from among those on this list.

The issuance of this list met with reactions from Iranian lawyers, who described such action as contrary to Iran’s laws.

Javaid Rehman, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Iran, had also expressed concern about the arrest of lawyers and preventing defendants from accessing lawyers during the case-building phase.
