Iraq’s Parliament Dissolved Ahead of Fresh Elections

Muhammad al-Halbousi, the Speaker of Iraq’s Council of Representatives, formally announced the dissolution of the country’s fourth parliament on Wednesday, October 5th, through an official statement.
Muhammad al-Halbousi stated in this statement that based on Article 64 of the Constitution and parliamentary resolution No. 32 passed in 2021, the membership of representatives in the fourth parliament comes to an end, and the term of this parliament concludes on October 7th (Thursday).
Iraq’s parliamentary elections will be held on Sunday to elect 329 representatives. These elections were originally scheduled for 2022, but Iraq’s parliament decided in April to hold the elections on October 9th.
In the 2018 parliamentary elections, a significant number of candidates affiliated with Shiite groups backed by Iran entered Iraq’s parliament due to the important role of the Popular Mobilization Forces in the victory over ISIS.
Shiite groups and their representatives in parliament do not hesitate to express unity and alignment with the Iranian government, describing their relations with Tehran as a strategic relationship based on mutual interests of the two countries.
