Judge Prevents Lawyer Fereshteh Tabanyan from Entering Court Due to Improper Dress Code

The judge of Branch 113 in Ahvaz prevented lawyer Fereshteh Tabanyan from entering the courtroom due to improper dress code.

Fereshteh Tabanyan, one of the lawyers at the Center of Lawyers of the Judiciary, was previously sentenced to three months in prison on charges of activities against the system.

On Wednesday, the 20th of Ordibehesht 1402 (April 9, 2023), Ms. Tabanyan was summoned to Branch 113 of the Criminal Court in Ahvaz to address charges against her. The charge filed against Fereshteh Tabanyan was “spreading lies with the intent to disturb public opinion.” Upon her arrival at the court, she was prevented from attending the court session by the branch judge, as she was not permitted entry.

The reason for denying Ms. Tabanyan entry was her dress code, which the judge deemed inappropriate. Her clothing was fully compliant and had no apparent defects, yet Fereshteh Tabanyan was prevented from attending the hearing of her own case.

The hijab issue is a matter on which even officials and clergy themselves disagree. However, people are being challenged over this not-so-important matter, and services are being denied to those without what is considered appropriate hijab.

Fereshteh Tabanyan’s dress code for appearing in court, which has been referred to as improper dress, has been circulated on social media platforms. From the officials’ perspective, this type of hijab is deemed inappropriate.
