New wave of “torrential rainfall on the way”; Warning of repeated flooding in Tehran

Tehran authorities, based on the meteorological organization’s forecast of the possibility of heavy rain on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, have warned of the occurrence of floods.

The death toll from the flooding that devastated the Kan district and the Emamzadeh Davoud area on Wednesday evening has reached 8 people, with 19 still missing. The flood has caused heavy damage to shops and commercial units in the area, and relief officials have asked residents to evacuate their homes.

“Torrential Rainfall”

Mohammad Hasan Nami, Deputy Minister and Head of the National Crisis Management Organization, warned on Thursday that “a new wave of torrential rainfall is on the way.”

The head of the National Crisis Management Organization stated, “The monsoon climate phenomenon can pose a threat to the country until Tuesday of next week, therefore all provinces should be on high alert.”

Mohammad Hasan Nami, referring to the entry of three moisture masses into Iran, emphasized: “When moisture masses collide with each other, they can bring very intense rainfall.”

Meanwhile, Ali Nasiri, Head of the Prevention and Crisis Management Organization of Tehran City, warned of a recurrence of flooding and said: “The meteorological organization has reported heavy rain in Tehran for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.”

He added: “Although according to forecasts, these rains will likely occur in a short period of time and during the evening and early night hours, since the rains are predicted to occur in a short time and with a large volume, there is a possibility of flooding and water accumulation.”

This Tehran relief official further announced the full alert of relief agencies and the closure of recreational facilities and commercial units in the margins of the capital’s waterways such as Darband, Darake, and Farahzad.

Also, the Deputy Director of Protection and Operation of the Tehran Regional Water Company, referring to the announcement of an orange alert by the meteorological organization and the continuation of the rainfall system until Sunday, asked Tehran citizens to strictly refrain from any traffic and camping in the beds of rivers and wadis.

Reza Kiayipour said: “Based on the orange alert issued by the meteorological organization, the occurrence of heavy rains, temporary strong winds, and lightning will continue for the next few days, which will lead to the possibility of flooding and runoff.”

Regional officials in the southeast of Tehran have also reported efforts to evacuate residential units on the banks of the Jajrud River in Qarchak city.

Majid Qasr Panahi, the central district official of Qarchak, said: “Four villages of Qashlaq Avval, Davoudabad, Jito, and Salehabad are located in the path of the Jajrud River, and since this morning, necessary warnings have been issued to residents for evacuation and necessary precautions against flooding and possible damages.”

Heavy rainfall and flooding in the past 24 hours have affected not only Tehran but also several other parts of Iran, including Sistan and Baluchestan Province, where five people have so far died as a result of incidents caused by rainfall.

Meanwhile, the General Meteorological Department of Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad Province issued a red alert due to the entry of monsoon rainfall systems into the province.

According to the meteorological organization’s announcement, the areas of Yasuj, Basht, Emamzadeh Jaafar, Boyer-Ahmad, Charam, Dehdasht Kohgiluyeh, Lende, Behmai, and the highlands and northern, northeast, and northwest strips of Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad Province will experience rainfall from Thursday evening until late Saturday.
