One of the Assailants of Hormozgan Ranger “Commits Suicide”

The commander of the environmental protection unit reported the “suicide” of one of the assailants who shot a Hormozgan ranger and had a family relationship with him.

On Tuesday night, in a clash between Mohammad Hassannezad, a Hormozgan ranger, and poachers in the Armak area of the province, two poachers shot the ranger with direct fire, incapacitating him, and fled.

According to Jamshid Mohabbat-Khani, commander of the environmental protection unit, speaking to IRNA news agency, the first assailant was immediately arrested while the second assailant managed to escape from police officers.

According to Mr. Mohabbat-Khani, the second assailant, who committed suicide with a firearm, was the nephew of the killed ranger.

He added that the second assailant “did not know during the clash that the ranger was his uncle, but when he realized he had killed his own uncle, he committed suicide.”

As IRNA reported: Ranger Hassannezad had 23 years of work experience in this field and was twice selected as an exemplary ranger.

Rangers are those responsible for protecting wildlife, particularly against illegal hunters in protected areas and forests.

Over the past three decades, at least 119 rangers in Iran have been killed in clashes with illegal poachers, and nearly 370 have been injured.
