Pope Leo Opens Vatican Environmental Education Center

Pope Leo, by opening the Vatican’s environmental education center, conveyed a fresh message in support of environmental protection.

According to Reuters, the Vatican educational center in Castel Gandolfo was opened with the aim of promoting environmental teachings and encouraging world leaders to combat the climate crisis. Pope Leo on Friday unveiled the new environmental education center on the outskirts of Rome, taking a fresh step in line with the Vatican’s commitment to protecting the Earth.

This center, built on 55 hectares of land within the historic grounds of a Renaissance villa in the Castel Gandolfo area, includes extensive gardens, professional skills training sections, and special programs for local children.

An American priest oversees the management of this complex. In explaining the center’s mission, he said: “The Vatican wants to be a model for how countries can pursue environmental initiatives. If we, the world’s smallest city-state, can do this, what potential exists for other larger nations than us? If we cooperate together, our world can be different.”

This project, named “Borgo Laudato Si,” was first introduced in 2023 by the late Pope Francis, a religious leader who had a special view of the necessity of environmental protection. According to the Vatican’s announcement, this project has taken up a considerable portion of its owned lands and covers approximately 55 percent of the total Vatican territories.

Pope Leo, the first American Catholic leader, emphasizes continuing the Church’s environmental path. He previously in July approved a new ritual that allows priests to invite believers to care for the Earth and nature during the Eucharist; an action that, in the view of many, is considered an unprecedented step in linking spirituality and the environment.
