Qatar’s Foreign Minister Travels to Tehran Days After Visit to America

Qatar’s Foreign Minister arrived in Tehran on an unannounced visit and held talks with Ibrahim Raisi, Iran’s president-elect, and Mohammad Javad Zarif, Iran’s Foreign Minister. This visit took place several days after his trip to Washington.
Sheikh Mohammad bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Qatar, arrived in Tehran on Sunday, Mordad 3 (July 25) on an unannounced visit, several days after traveling to America.
Al Thani held talks with Ibrahim Raisi, Iran’s president-elect, during this visit.
According to IRNA news agency, Raisi said during this meeting: “Tehran attaches special importance to relations with Doha and the foreign policy priority of the future government will be neighbors.”
He assured the Qatari diplomat that Iran “is well-wishing toward its neighbors.”
Qatar’s Foreign Minister also said: “Qatar seeks cooperation to strengthen bilateral relations and also efforts to ensure regional security through cooperation with the Islamic Republic of Iran.”
Before meeting with Raisi, Qatar’s Foreign Minister held talks and exchanged views with Mohammad Javad Zarif, his Iranian counterpart. According to the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic, the two sides exchanged views on “the latest developments in bilateral relations and important regional and international issues.”
Several days before this meeting, on July 22, Qatar’s Foreign Minister held talks with Antony Blinken, his American counterpart, in Washington.
Blinken had said: “Qatar is a vital partner to the United States in many areas, and Washington appreciates Qatar’s role in Afghan peace talks and the dispute between Palestinians and Israel.”
Mohammad bin Abdulrahman Al Thani told the “Al Hurra” television network based in America that he discussed conditions in Afghanistan, developments in Iran’s nuclear agreement, Lebanon and Iraq, as well as the situation in the Gaza Strip with Blinken in Washington.
Bloomberg news agency assessed Qatar’s Foreign Minister’s visit to Iran as an attempt at possible mediation to improve Iran’s relations with its neighbors.
Qatar’s Foreign Minister had said six months ago in an interview with the news agency that his country was ready to mediate to end deep differences between Iran and some of its neighbors in the region.
