Removal of Currency Quota Causes Unemployment of Hundreds of Workers at Jalfa Carpet Factory

Following the currency crisis in Iran and the announcement of new government currency policies, hundreds of workers at Jalfa Carpet Factory have lost their jobs.

Irana Labor News Agency, ILNA, reported on Sunday, September 18, that with the elimination of the 4,200-toman currency quota, the factory has lost the ability to purchase and import raw materials and its production lines have stopped operating.

One of the factory managers told the news agency that approximately 200 workers have become unemployed due to the shutdown of two production lines, and by Wednesday, due to the complete closure of the factory, all 520 workers will lose their jobs.

Jalfa Carpet Factory in the Aras region recently lost its 4,200-toman dollar quota for purchasing raw materials and must now purchase these materials at the secondary market rate of 8,000 tomans per dollar. The factory managers announced that securing raw materials at this price is beyond their capacity and decided to shut down production lines.

The severe currency price crisis in Iran, which intensified following the United States’ withdrawal from the JCPOA, has caused sharp increases in imported goods prices and the closure of some production units.

Unemployment of workers in production units whose raw material supplies depend on imports is occurring while over the past year, many workers from factories and production centers have gone on strike and held protest gatherings due to occupational problems.
