Revolutionary Court Sentences: One Bookseller and Two Student Activists to Over 7 Years in Prison

Yashar Tohidi, a student activist, announced his conviction by posting a statement on Twitter, along with Mohammad Iran-Nejad, a bookseller based in Tehran, and Sara Askari, a student at the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Tehran, in a joint case.

Yashar Tohidi, a student activist based in Tehran, announced the news on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, in a Twitter thread. He, as the second defendant in the case, and Mohammad Iran-Nejad, as the first defendant in the case, have each been sentenced by the Revolutionary Court to 3 years and 5 months in prison on charges of “acting against national security through membership in left-wing Marxist groups” and “propaganda against the system.”

Mr. Tohidi further stated in his Twitter thread that Sara Askari has been sentenced to 6 months in prison and a fine of 7 million tomans on charges of “spreading false information,” which has been suspended for 5 years.

Mohammad Iran-Nejad, a bookseller based in Tehran, also confirmed the news in his Twitter post, stating that the verdict was issued by Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, and only 2 years and 9 months of the sentence will be enforceable on the charge of acting against national security through membership in left-wing Marxist groups.

Previously, HRANA, the news agency of the Human Rights Activists News Agency in Iran, reported on setting the date of the court hearing to examine the charges against Yashar Tohidi, Sara Askari, and Mohammad Iran-Nejad on December 18 through separate notifications in Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court. The agency stated that these citizens had been summoned in September of this year through a notification to Branch 3 of the Evin Judicial Investigation Office, headed by Judge Mohammad-Mahdi Brae’a.
