Storm in Tehran; One Dead and Dozens Injured

An unprecedented storm has swept across Tehran Province. According to meteorological reports, the storm moved from Imam Khomeini Airport toward western Tehran. So far, the storm has resulted in one death and more than 50 injured.

The unprecedented dust storm swept through all cities and towns in Tehran Province. The storm and rain in Rey, Robat Karim, and the vicinity of Imam Khomeini Airport were severe and accompanied by scattered dust and heavy downpours.

On Wednesday, June 9th (May 30th), the storm affected Tehran, Malard, Shahriar, Qods, Varamin, Pishva, Pakdasht, and Qarchak.

Ahmad Sadeghi, head of Tehran’s Crisis Management Headquarters, told the Young Journalists Club that one person died on Shahid Rajaei Street in District 16 due to a wall collapse. He said that in addition to this wall collapse, several trees were broken and in some areas, building scaffolding collapsed.

Mojtaba Khaldi, spokesperson for Tehran Emergency Services, reported that 52 people were injured in Tehran and 4 people were transferred to hospitals as a result of the storm.

Jalal Maleki, spokesperson for the Fire Department, had mentioned the falling of heavy objects from building heights, the collapse of building stone facades, and the rupture of power lines. The storm disrupted public order in Tehran, and the severe dust caused reduced visibility and traffic problems.

The Meteorological Organization reported wind speeds in Tehran at 58 kilometers per hour. Wind speed in the Varamin Plain was reported at 70 kilometers per hour.

Mehr News Agency reported that damage was caused to municipal facilities in Varamin and Pishva.

Before the storm occurred, Tehran’s Prevention and Crisis Management Organization had warned of a storm moving toward Tehran at a speed of 80 kilometers per hour. The public had been urged to avoid being in elevated areas, such as rooftops and window ledges, and if they are on the streets, to avoid stopping near old buildings and old trees, scaffolding, and objects that might fall.
