Suicide Statistics for 1401 Become Classified

The head of the Iranian Association of Social Workers announced that suicide statistics for 1401 onwards have been classified.
“Hassan Mousavi Chelak,” head of the Iranian Association of Social Workers, stated in a report: “Suicide statistics for 1401 and thereafter are classified, but I can say that the number of deaths has increased. In general, the trend of deaths resulting from suicide attempts in the country is rising. In the field of suicide, the trend we are experiencing in Iran is concerning.”
According to classified reports, following the start of the popular uprising that began with the death of Mahsa Amini at the hands of the government, suicide statistics among the Iranian population showed an increasing trend. Many of those arrested during nationwide protests, including women, men, adolescents, young adults, and even middle-aged individuals, were tortured and even assaulted after their arrest. Many of those who had been assaulted took their own lives after release, and some could not bear the injustice due to other torture they had endured and committed suicide. Many were also killed in prisons, with suicide attributed to them. For this reason, suicide statistics for 1401 and onwards from the popular uprising have remained classified.
These classified statistics, whose numbers are unknown, are very concerning. These concerns persist while, according to Hassan Mousavi’s reports, according to official statistics from 1396, approximately 4,625 deaths resulting from suicide attempts were officially recorded in Iran, and in 1400 that number reached 6,244 people. However, this statistic has been classified for 1401 onwards. I can only say that the numbers have increased and are rising, which is very concerning.”
He also explained regarding which provinces have higher suicide rates and deaths resulting from them, adding: “The northwestern provinces of the country have a much more dire situation compared to other provinces.”
According to his statements, the northwestern provinces of the country include Kermanshah, Ilam, Kurdistan, Lorestan, Ardabil, and many others. Based on these statistics, the provinces that have had the highest suicide rates have been those that experienced the most severe suppression of people by the system over the past year.
