Tehran University President: Prosecutor Called to Arrest ‘Unveiled’ Female Students and Faculty Dean

Following the publication of an image showing several female students removing their headscarves while taking graduation photos in front of Tehran University’s main entrance, the university’s president responded to the matter.
The photo was released in November by the news website “Ensaf News,” which criticized the students and referred to it as “hijab removal.”
News website Jamaran reported on Tuesday, December 7, that Mohammad Moghimi, president of Tehran University, stated at an event that “the prosecutor intended to arrest these students.”
During this ceremony, held on the occasion of “Student Day,” in response to a question about following up on imprisoned students, he said: “We are examining these cases. For example, regarding the unveiled photo in front of the university, I verified with evidence that these were not our students and were pharmacy students. The prosecutor called and said the faculty dean and the student should be arrested, but I said we have our own investigation mechanism.”
No news has been published regarding “action” taken against the mentioned students and the pharmacy faculty dean.
Mohammad Moghimi replaced Mahmoud Nili Ahmadi as president of Tehran University on October 2 of this year, and in his inauguration ceremony stated that he would not allow Tehran University’s platform to become “a platform against the system.”
Moghimi was appointed as acting president of Tehran University after Mahmoud Nili Ahmadabadi, the university’s former president, sent a letter on September 20 to Mohseni Eje’i, the head of the judiciary, requesting a pardon or conditional release for Kasra Nouri, an imprisoned student.
Nili Ahmadabadi was removed from his position the following day by an order from the Minister of Science, and Moghimi replaced him.
Nili Ahmadabadi had stated that, given that Kasra Nouri had completed half of his prison sentence and the law permits his release under these circumstances, Tehran University, at the request of the imprisoned student’s family, had placed a request for his release on its agenda.
