Transparency International: Iran’s Corruption Situation Worsens for Fourth Consecutive Year

Transparency International in its latest annual report released on Thursday, Bahman 9, stated that Iran ranks 149th among 180 countries in terms of the extent of financial corruption.
In 2017, Iran’s ranking in corruption among countries was 130, in 2018 it reached 138, and in 2019 it reached 146. Now, Iran’s transparency situation has worsened again, reaching rank 149.
Among Iran’s neighboring countries and the region, the situation in Turkmenistan, Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, and Yemen is worse than Iran.
According to the statistics of this international organization, besides the aforementioned countries, several African countries, Venezuela, and North Korea have worse conditions than Iran at the global level.
In terms of the extent of financial corruption, Iran is on par with Lebanon, Guatemala, Cameroon, Tajikistan, Madagascar, Mozambique, and Nigeria.
Transparency International states that during the past year, no significant positive changes have been observed in the level of transparency and anti-corruption efforts in the world, and two-thirds of the world’s countries rank below 50.
In terms of corruption index ranking, this international organization gives countries a score from zero to 100, and the higher the score, the better the transparency situation of a country. Iran’s score is 26 and has dropped one level compared to last year.
The report states that the best countries in terms of the corruption index are Denmark, New Zealand, Finland, Singapore, Sweden, and Switzerland, and the worst countries in terms of financial corruption are, respectively, South Sudan, Somalia, Syria, Yemen, and Venezuela.
Since 2012, the situation of 26 countries has improved in terms of the corruption index, but the situation of 22 countries, including Iran and Lebanon, has worsened.
The report states that financial corruption is an obstacle to effective measures against the economic consequences of coronavirus epidemic and other crises, particularly emergency situations.
