Trump: We Are Ready to Reach a Real Deal with Iran

Two days after the US president sharply warned about Iran’s behavior in a tweet, Donald Trump still considered negotiations for a deal on denuclearizing Iran possible.

In remarks to a gathering of American veterans, Mr. Trump said “we’ll see what happens, but we are ready to reach a real deal. Not what was formed in the previous administration and was a disaster.”

The president, who has been a serious critic of the nuclear deal with Iran since his election campaign and has repeatedly referred to it as the worst possible deal, exited the JCPOA on May 8 of this year, after which the process of reinstating American sanctions against the Islamic Republic began.

The first round of American sanctions against Iran will take effect in less than two weeks, and until all of America’s unilateral sanctions against the Islamic Republic are fully reinstated on November 4 of this year, the US is determined to bring Iranian oil exports to zero; a matter that was also emphasized during the US Secretary of State’s meeting with the Iranian-American community.

Iran stated through its Foreign Ministry spokesperson that if America wants to block Iranian oil exports, it will face “reciprocal action” from Iran.

A matter that has recently been alluded to several times, both implicitly and explicitly, by Hassan Rouhani. He said on Sunday, for instance, that America should not play with the lion’s tail.

Mr. Rouhani also added that “the group currently in power in America, if we surrender to them and take one step backward, will plunder all the nation’s interests, and under these circumstances we are not afraid and will stand against them until our last drop of blood.”

He recalled that “speaking to America, negotiating with it, and talking to it has no meaning except surrender”; repeating the position of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic who said a day before that “imagining a solution to the country’s problems through negotiations or relations with America is an obvious mistake.”

Mr. Rouhani’s remarks on Sunday, however, prompted a harsh response from Donald Trump, and on Sunday night Washington time he tweeted a warning to Hassan Rouhani that threatening America would have bad consequences for Iran.

On Monday night, Mike Pence, US Vice President, alluding to Mr. Trump’s tweet, warned that America will no longer tolerate “violence and terrorism” from Iran and threats against the United States.
