Two Iranian Border Guards Killed in Clashes in Sardasht Region

Reports indicate that two border guards were killed in clashes between armed individuals and Iranian border guard forces affiliated with the Sardasht border battalion in West Azerbaijan.

The Iranian state news agency IRNA, citing the “NAJA Martyrs News Base,” reported that the clashes began at 11 p.m. on Tuesday, June 5, at the Sardasht border battalion in the Gourkan Beyoran area, Kanisyu checkpoint.

According to the report, First Lieutenant Youssef Piraneh and First Warrant Officer Mahboob Ghorbani were killed in clashes with “a number of criminals affiliated with terrorist groups.”

Iranian Islamic Republic media outlets refer to armed opposition groups as terrorist organizations.

Iranian official sources have not yet confirmed news of these clashes.

Meanwhile, no group has claimed responsibility for the clashes.

In recent years, the provinces of West Azerbaijan, Kurdistan, and Kermanshah have witnessed clashes between Iranian security forces and armed groups opposed to the Islamic Republic, including the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan and members of the Free Life Party of Kurdistan, known as PJAK.

Last year, two border guards and two experts from Iran’s Water Organization were wounded by gunfire in the “Boralran” area in Maku city in West Azerbaijan province, on the Iran-Turkey border, with one of the border guards dying from the severity of his injuries.

Previously, Revolutionary Guards commanders had announced the thwarting of operations by PJAK’s Free Life Party of Kurdistan forces in Kurdistan and West Azerbaijan.

The Islamic Republic of Iran accuses these Kurdish armed groups of “separatism” and “contact with foreigners.” On the other hand, these groups accuse the Islamic Republic of violating Kurds’ rights in Iran and say their goal is to pursue Kurdish rights.
